Igreja de São Tiago (The Church of São Tiago), Funchal

The Church of São Tiago (Igreja de São Tiago), also referred to as the Church of Santa Maria Maior and the Church of Socorro, has undergone several reconstructions throughout its history, resulting in a change of names each time. The church's current name honors São Tiago, the protector of Funchal City. It was constructed in the 18th century and features the typical characteristics of Baroque-style buildings of that period, with a façade made of stonework from the island and doors that still retain their original wood, showcasing one of the finest works on the island.

The church is situated in a picturesque square surrounded by trees, providing a pleasant and serene atmosphere for visitors. The parochial residence, which houses the architectural structures of the former chapel from the 16th and 17th centuries, is also located nearby and is accessible from the square.

While the interior of the church has undergone extensive remodeling over the centuries, visitors can still catch glimpses of its historical past. A tabernacle made of silver and exotic wood, as well as a 16th-century peace holder that people used to kiss during religious ceremonies, are the only remaining artifacts of the old church. The peace holder is now on display at the Museum of Sacred Art.

The Church of São Tiago is an excellent example of the rich cultural heritage of Funchal and is well worth a visit for those interested in exploring the island's history and religious heritage.
