Igreja Matriz de São José, Recife

Igreja Matriz de São José, Recife

Igreja Matriz de São José is another striking sight in Recife. The church was erected on the site of an older chapel, with construction beginning in 1845 and taking 20 years to be completed. It stands out from the other baroque churches in Recife because it is a Romanesque one. The Igreja Matriz de São José has two magnificent bell-towers flanking the facade, shutters on the ground floor and two levels of arched windows. The building has undergone several renovations. To reach it from Avenida Dantas Berreta, turn left at the Rua de Peixoto and go 130 meters until you reach the church right at the junction with Rua Vidal Negreiros.
