Julianakerk (Juliana Church), Hague
The Juliana Church (Julianakerk), situated in The Hague, is a remarkable architectural and historical monument. It is located in the Transvaal Quarter, at the heart of The Hague, and was built between 1925 and 1926. Its primary purpose was to serve the Reformed community from the Transvaal district and the Schilderswijk.
Architecturally, the church reflects the Amsterdam School style, known for its expressive and decorative elements. The church's design is the work of architect Gijs van Hoogevest (1887-1968), who captured the architectural trends of the era and the aspirations of the local community. The church's exterior is characterized by concrete covered with decorative brickwork, which is a hallmark of the Amsterdam School style.
The Transvaal district, developed between 1901 and 1932, saw the construction of several religious buildings, including a Reformed church in 1913 and a Catholic church a year later. However, the construction of the Juliana Church was delayed until 1925. During this period, Reverend Van den Bosch led a fundraising campaign, culminating in Crown Princess Juliana laying the foundation stone in 1925. In 1927, the princess officially joined the religious group associated with this church. Apart from religious services, the church is also used as a venue for theater performances and other events.
