Reservatorio da Mae d'Agua ("Mother of Water" Reservoir), Lisbon

Moving around Lisbon, one can't help but notice the large-scale 18th-century aqueduct that runs for 19 km throughout the city. Yet, unbeknown to most, the aqueduct feeds into a beautifully designed reservoir complex known as the Mãe d'Água ("Mother of Water"). Situated within walking distance of the downtown area, in front of the Amoreira Gardens, is the entryway to this water sancturary that houses a remarkable water tank, 7.5 m deep and with a total capacity of ~5500 m3.

Completed in 1834, the facility has been rendered obsolete by modern technology – yet, for a fee, visitors can climb to its very top where the roof terrace gives the advantage of a bird's eye view of the city and coast. It may feel like being in a trance for a moment or two, and what makes it even more interesting is that there's hardly anyone around. Despite having been recognized as a national monument since 1910, the reservoir is not a tourist hotspot but, rather, a tranquil retreat to relax, to hide, or contemplate with a cool drink – at the same time making for good photo opportunities.

Inside the Water Museum, which resides within the reservoir, you'll discover a refreshing space that offers respite, particularly during the summer months. As you wander through, you can gaze upon the section of the aqueduct that leads to the museum. The center of the floor features a pool of water, while one side includes a moss/plant-covered wall. It's said that this space possesses incredible acoustics, attracting numerous artists who have chosen to record their work here.
