New Mechouar and Dar al-Makina (Former Arms Factory), Fes

New Mechouar and Dar al-Makina (Former Arms Factory), Fes

To the north of the Old Mechouar, through the monumental Bab Dekkakin lies the New Mechouar. According to scholars, it was created by Sultan Moulay Hassan (Hassan I) in the late 19th century.

Originally, the western wall of the New Mechouar was actually a large Marinid aqueduct built in 1286 to carry water to the Mosara Garden in the north; the faint outline of its arches can still be seen today within the structure of the wall. The northern gate of the New Mechouar, known as "Gate of the Butter Niche", also dates from the 1886 construction, though another gate called Bab Segma (formerly part of the Marinid gardens) also lends its name to the area.

On the western side of the square is a gateway in the Italianate architectural style which belongs to a former arms factory (also called Dar al-Silah) established by Moulay Hassan in 1886 with the help of Italian officers. The arms factory was an early attempt at industrialization in Fez and was part of the sultan's efforts to modernize the Moroccan army to compete with European powers, though they did not produce major impact.

The factory is no longer in use today and stands abandoned and partially ruined. The structure is scheduled to be restored as part of a broader plan to restore over a hundred historic monuments in Fez.

Created by the French in the early 20th century, Ville Nouvelle (New Town) is a relatively modern central district of Fez. A far cry from the sensory overload provided by the old Medina, this neighborhood was originally designed to accommodate foreigners and affluent Moroccans only.

Still, Fez's Ville Nouvelle is as much 'real' Morocco as any donkey-packed lane in the old city....  view more
