Altice Arena, Lisbon
Situated on the riverfront within Lisbon's Nations' Park (Parque das Nações), the Altice Arena, formerly known as the Pavilhão Atlântico, boasts a distinctive flying saucer-like design. This versatile venue hosts a range of events, from sporting spectacles like basketball and tennis to electrifying concerts featuring both renowned international and local artists. Originally serving as the Utopia Pavilion during Lisbon's Expo 98, it has since evolved into Portugal's largest indoor arena, offering an ideal location complemented by excellent amenities, including a nearby shopping mall. With its array of bars, efficient organization, and minimal wait times, it's a top-notch destination for enjoying live music performances.
Prior to its construction, Lisbon faced a shortage of substantial indoor arenas, which led to the city often being bypassed by prominent acts and sporting competitions. The opportunity to address this void presented itself during Expo '98, prompting city planners to create Portugal's most expansive indoor entertainment venue. Designed by the accomplished Portuguese architect Regino Cruz in collaboration with the esteemed international consultancy firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the arena's exterior mirrors the appearance of a landed UFO, while its interior conjures the imagery of a 16th-century ship's hull, complete with a network of wooden supports.
