Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Mostar

Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Mostar

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, located in the Bjelusine neighborhood of Mostar, holds a significant place in the city's history and culture. As the oldest Christian church in Mostar, it was constructed in 1873 and stands as a testament to interfaith tolerance, a value that is particularly noteworthy considering it has been 25 years since the end of the Bosnian War. The cathedral served as the seat of the Eparchy of Zahumlje and Herzegovina, an ecclesiastical district under the authority of a bishop.

Designed by the renowned architect Andrey Damyanov, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity features a basilica base with limited and small openings, reflecting an enhanced Byzantine style. The interior is illuminated by six unequal domes situated on high-glazed tambourines, creating a unique ambiance. The bell tower, constructed in the Baroque style, combines elements of an attic with Gothic and Oriental influences.

Upon entering the church, visitors are greeted by the splendor of rich gilded carvings and an imposing altar adorned with 44 icons. The architectural masterpiece also showcases a large three-part gate at its entrance, designed in the expressionist style by the architect Momir Korunović.

Unfortunately, during the onset of the civil war in 1992, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity suffered destruction. However, the reconstruction began in 2010, and the restoration is now nearing completion. The restoration efforts have been instrumental in reviving the cathedral's original grandeur and preserving its historical and cultural significance.
