Musee Lapidaire, Avignon

The picturesque Musee Lapidaire, a prominent tourist attraction, has a beautiful Baroque architecture and interior that is sure to impress. A former Jesuit Church, part of the Calvet Museum's archaeological and medieval sculpture collection are kept on display here. The original chapel was established by Marcel Provence in the 17th century. Provence was a collector of altars, ancient deity sculptures and stonework. A variety of civilizations and epochs are represented here, though mainly Gallo-Roman. Among its exhibits is a wonderful reproduction of Apollo the Python Killer created by Praxiteles, a Tarasque figure, masks from Vaison, ancient sarcophagi and funerary accessories.
