Museo del Romanticismo (Museum of Romanticism), Madrid

Museo del Romanticismo (Museum of Romanticism), Madrid

This delightful museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the Romantic Movement, a time when artists and writers in Spain began to venture into the realm of free expression during the 1820s. The Neo-Classical mansion, built in 1776, underwent a transformation into a museum by the Marquis of Vega-Inclán. Known as the founder of Spain's network of state-owned parador hotels, the Marquis was an enthusiastic art collector. In 1921, he generously donated his collection of 19th-century paintings, books, and select furniture. Eventually, the state acquired the collection and reorganized it to emulate the opulent residence of a prosperous family from the mid-19th century, evoking the spirit of the Romantic period.

The museum showcases its exhibits in 26 rooms located on the ground and first floors of the mansion. Within this expansive space, visitors can explore a diverse range of 19th-century objects, such as dolls, musical instruments, and photographs. The collection also highlights a significant number of portraits created by esteemed artists. Notable examples include Esquivel's "General Prim" and Salvador Gutiérrez's "María Cristina". Leonardo Alenza's works hold a prominent place as well, with the thought-provoking "Satire of a Romantic Suicide" among the highlights. Furthermore, the museum presents earlier artworks, including Goya's painting of "St. Gregory the Great", which is displayed above the chapel's altar in Room 13.

Why You Should Visit:
If you want to get an insight into this particular era of Spanish aristocracy living, then this is for you. The majority of points of interest are located on the 1st floor and are easily navigable, aided by a helpful room plan provided to visitors. The collection offers a diverse range of exhibits, with a particular focus on paintings and furniture. Each room is beautifully adorned, and informative plaques accompany most items. Extra amenities: cloakroom, small gift shop, café, and a charming garden area.

Tip:
You are free to take advantage of the generous 'free visit' Saturday after 2pm, but if you cannot avail of that option, note that the standard entrance fee is relatively affordable considering the wealth of exhibits on display.
