Museu da Electricidade (Electricity Museum), Funchal
The former Funchal Thermal Power Station, which was inaugurated in 1897 by the first electricity concessionaire in Madeira, the Madeira Electric Lighting Company Limited, now houses the Electricity Museum "House of Light" (Casa da Luz).
The Museum comprises three main exhibitions. The first one, named "Lights of the Funchal," showcases various types of lighting used in Funchal throughout history, from olive oil lamps to modern lamps, along with corresponding urban furniture.
The second exhibition, titled "A Century of Electricity," displays the history of electrification on the island, showcasing diverse machinery and the two main forms of electric energy production - thermal and hydraulic. Visitors can explore several power station models and an oro-hydrographic map illustrating the gradual electrification of the archipelago.
The third area of the exhibition is dedicated to "energy sources," which explains the different types of energy sources, including renewable energy. The science and technology area is equipped with interactive equipment and multimedia software, including virtual reality helmets, plasma balls, Faraday cages, fiber optics, and multimedia kiosks. Here, visitors can explore the Museum's CD-ROM and use computers with software suitable for the theme.
Apart from the exhibitions, the Electricity Museum also features a temporary exhibition area, a documentation center, an auditorium, a shop, and a cafeteria.
