Museu de Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art), Funchal

The Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the former Episcopal Palace, which was constructed in the 16th century by D. Luís Figueiredo de Lemos and conceptualized by Jerónimo Jorge, a master of royal works. The palace served as the Lyceum of Funchal from 1914 to 1943 and then became the Diocesan Museum in 1950 after the Lyceum left.

The museum houses various collections of paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and religious garments that date back to the 15th to 19th centuries. The collection mainly focuses on Flemish and Portuguese art. Notable Flemish art pieces include altarpieces such as The Descent from the Cross by Gérard David, São Tiago by Dieric Bouts, and The Adoration of the Magi by the Master of Adoration of Machico. Portuguese art is also represented, with works like Ecce Homo and the Ascension of Christ attributed to Fernão Gomes.

The museum's Flemish sculptures, particularly those from Malines and Antwerp, and the large paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries, are well-known. Additionally, the museum has an impressive jewelry collection with items from the 16th to 19th centuries, including the processional cross of Água de Pena and a tray and chalice with a punch from Antwerp.

The museum also features a Torre Varanda Mirante, a tower with a balcony used to observe ships arriving and leaving the bay of Funchal. The balcony has a blue and white tile panel, typical of Lisbon workshops from the late 18th century, representing the Three "Theological" Virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity.
