Museu do Instituto Arqueológico was founded in 1862 at the suggestion of Dom Pedro II, the ruler of Brazil at that time. Since then, the museum changed locations several times. It is a great museum that shows the history of the state. The collection of the museum is organized in rooms by themes. It consists of memorabilia like coins, weaponry, furniture, maps, art objects, religious objects, heraldry and many other interesting things. The museum is open Mondays – Fridays from 13:00 until 17:00 and on Saturdays from 8:00 until 12:00. The museum is located 100 meters down from the corner of Avenida Conde da Boa Vista and Rua do Hospício.
