Museum of the German History, Bonn

Museum of the German History, Bonn (must see)

After the capitol of unified Germany returned to Berlin, the former West German government district of Bonn became the so-called Museum Mile of Bonn. The Museum of German History is located at Bundstrasse 9. This is immediately north of the Bonn Art Museum and the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal German Republic.

The museum deals with the recent history of Germany from the end of World War II until today. It occupies an area of 4,000 square meters and it holds over 7,000 artifacts and 160 media exhibits. The political histories of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and East Germany (GDR) are joined in a common thread of discourse and dialogue.

The dream of a German history museum was articulated as early as 1982 by West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. The building was designed by architects Ingeborg and Hartmut Rudiger. In addition to the permanent exhibition, there are changing and touring exhibitions, a large collection of cartoons, and an excavated Roman cellar.
