National Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions, Algiers

The National Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions is housed in Dar Khadoudja, a palace built by Ahmed Rais in 1572. The building was bought in 1789 by Hassan Khaznadji for his blind daughter Khadoudja. In 1860, Dar Khadoudja hosted Napoleon III and Eugénie during their stay in Algiers. After their visit, the building was transformed into a museum. The interior remains as it was during the 19th century. The museum has a large collection of traditional Algerian musical instruments, carpets, and other local crafts.
