National Gallery – Sternberg Palace, Prague

National Gallery – Sternberg Palace, Prague

The National Gallery housed in Stenberg Palace exemplifies Prague's commitment to using its grandest structures to showcase culture, art, and history. A visit to Prague Castle would be incomplete without exploring this delightful gallery, dedicated to European art spanning from the medieval period to the 21st century.

On the ground floor, visitors will find a charming café and gardens adorned with modern 20th-century Czech sculpture. Additionally, there is an exhibition showcasing German and Austrian art from the 15th to the 18th century. Notable works include Dürer's "Feast of the Rosary', a prized acquisition of Rudolf II, famously transported on foot across the Alps to Prague, and Jean-Antoine Houdon's 1776 bronze sculpture of Diana.

Moving to the first floor, highlights include Dieric Bouts' "Lamentation", a densely populated composition depicting figures in medieval attire, as well as richly colored portraits by Bronzino and Jan Gossaert's captivating "Saint Luke Drawing the Virgin", notable for its architectural precision and perspective. Before ascending to the next level, visitors shouldn't overlook room 11, which houses Orthodox icons from Venice, the Balkans, and Russia.

The second floor, the largest section of the gallery, features a poignant portrait of old age by Tintoretto, a rugged portrait by Goya, and a mesmerizing "Praying Christ" by El Greco. Of particular interest is the Činský kabinet, a small oval chamber adorned with vibrant Baroque Chinoiserie, providing a glimpse into the palace's original décor. Other highlights include a series of canvases by the Brueghels, a Rembrandt, and Rubens' monumental "Murder of Saint Thomas" in room 30.
