Musee des Beaux-Arts (National Museum of Fine Arts), Algiers

Musee des Beaux-Arts (National Museum of Fine Arts), Algiers

The National Museum of Fine Arts is the largest museum of arts in Maghreb and Africa. The museum had a collection before there was even a place to house it. After twenty years of inactivity, Paul Guion, a young architect, was hired to construct a building fit to display the museum's growing collection. The interior rooms were decorated by Francis Jourdain. Each of the floors in the three-story building showcases a different collection.

Thanks to a variety of donations and judicious purchases, the museum has some fine pieces by well-recognized artists such as Pissarro, Renoir, Courbet and Matisse. In addition to paintings, the museum has a large collection of sculptures, photographs, ceramics and decorative arts.
