River Gate (North Gate), Kotor

River Gate (North Gate), Kotor

The quietest of the town's gates is on the north side, along the Skurda River. A narrow stone bridge connects the gate with the other side of the river.

The gate was built in 1540 in the Renaissance style. It is unimposing and small. The primary defensive posture of the gate is the moat-like river.

The gate is one of the best spots to meet some of the city's most famed residents. The cats of Kotor like to lay in the sun on the bridge and around the gate.

The view of the defense structures and city walls is great from the stone bridge. You can see how well protected the city was and how its defenses were literally built into the mountain. It's an excellent spot for pictures. Take a moment to look down into the clear river water--you're sure to spot many fish!

North Gate leads straight into the winding streets of the old town. From here, you can connect to Craftsmen Street and many of the historic squares in the old town.
