Numismatic Museum at the Palace of Troy, Athens

Numismatic Museum at the Palace of Troy, Athens

Even those with little interest in coins may find a visit to this museum intriguing due to its historical significance as the former residence of Heinrich Schliemann, the renowned 19th-century archaeologist who famously excavated Troy and Mycenae. With its imposing neo-Venetian facade, the house was designed by Bavarian architect Ernst Ziller for Schliemann's family and was named the "Palace of Troy" ("Iliou Melanthron").

Inside, the residence was adorned in the style of ancient Pompeii, featuring mosaic flooring and fresco-covered walls to evoke a sense of antiquity. In 1927, the building was repurposed as the Greek Supreme Court; however, following extensive renovation and restoration efforts, it now houses a remarkable collection of over 600,000 coins spanning from ancient times to the Middle Ages.

The exhibits cover a wide range, from Schliemann's personal coin collection to 4th-century BC measures used to combat counterfeiting. Coins are also categorized based on their depictions, encompassing themes such as animals, plants, myths, and famous buildings.
