O.L.V. Onbevlekt Ontvangen (Our Lady Immaculate Conception Eland Church), Hague

The Our Lady Immaculate Conception Eland Church (O.L.V. Onbevlekt Ontvangen) is a notable Roman Catholic church located in The Hague. It sits on Elandstraat, opposite Elandplein, within the Zeeheldenkwartier neighborhood. This church, along with its religious community, is an integral part of the Maria Sterre der Zee parish.

The need for the Eland Church arose in the 19th century when the Roman Catholic population in The Hague expanded rapidly, rendering the Teresia van Avila Church on Westeinde insufficient. This growth coincided with the city's expansion towards the Zeeheldenkwartier neighbourhood. In 1877, Father Marijnen, associated with the Teresia van Avila Church, purchased land from Sophie van Sachsen-Weimar, King Willem II's daughter. An auxiliary church, which later gained independence as a parish church, was constructed in 1878. By 1890, plans were underway for a new church, with Molenaar Sr. commissioned as the architect.

Constructed between 1891 and 1892, the church is a neo-Gothic masterpiece inspired by Paris's Notre-Dame. It features two 72-meter-high west towers, a 60-meter length, and a 46-meter total width, with a nave extending 28.5 meters. The church is adorned with 66 stained glass windows from its construction period. A prominent feature outside the west portal is the statue of Mary Immaculate, a gift from the ladies' congregation in 1893. The church was inaugurated on December 1, 1892, by Bishop Bottemanne of Haarlem, marking a significant milestone in the religious and architectural landscape of The Hague.
