Palacio de la Artesania (Palace of Crafts), Havana

The Palace of Crafts, known as Palacio de la Artesanía in Spanish, is located in Havana. Built in 1780, this magnificent colonial building was first owned by Mateo Pedroso, a colonial administrator born in Cuba. Its prime location on Cuba Street, between Peña Pobre and Cuarteles, adds to its charm. Additionally, its proximity to the historical Garita Maestranza, a part of Havana's old wall, enhances its historical value.

The palace boasts a grand lobby leading to a beautiful patio, surrounded by spacious rooms and wide columns, showcasing its opulence. Reflecting 18th-century norms, the ground floor served commercial purposes, the mezzanine housed servants, and the main floor was for the owners. A later addition, the top floor, necessitated the removal of the original roof. Noteworthy architectural elements include a long balcony supported by eleven wooden columns and a unique roof. Inside, a stunning four-branch staircase leads to a vast elliptical skylight, illuminating the mezzanine with elegance and brightness.

The restoration efforts in 1938, led by Joaquín E. Weiss, have preserved the building's grandeur for future generations. Today, the Palace of Crafts continues to thrive as a cultural and commercial center. It offers a plethora of products, including tobacco, cigarettes, drinks, souvenirs, crafts, perfumery, clothing, and footwear. The diversity and competitive pricing make it a favored destination for those looking to purchase unique items. The courtyard houses a cafeteria, providing a space for visitors to relax and enjoy live Cuban music, further enhancing the immersive experience of this historical site.
