Italian Naval Academy, Livorno

Italian Naval Academy, Livorno

The Italian Naval Academy, known in Italian as Accademia Navale, is a university that trains military officers for the Italian Navy. The academy is located on the grounds of the former Hospital of St. James, which was built in the 1640s. It also occupies the former Hospital of St. Leopold, built in 1773.

The Naval Academy was inaugurated in 1881. It was founded by Admiral Benedetto Brin, Secretary of the Navy. The complex design was managed by Luigi Pestalozza, captain of the military engineers. It briefly moved from Livorno to Venice after World War II bombings caused massive damage to the building structures. The academy returned to Livorno in 1946.

The entire complex is roughly 25 million square feet, which is about 574 acres. The complex is comprised of classrooms, residence halls, laboratories, auditoriums, libraries, cinemas, a pool and a gym.

Those stopping by the Italian Naval Academy should look for the monument to Benedetto Brin, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and naval administrator.
