Pereira d’Oliveira Vinhos (Pereira d'Oliveira Wines), Funchal

Pereira D’Oliveira is a well-established company that offers an extensive selection of Madeira wines and has a charming tasting room in the heart of Funchal, making it a must-visit destination for any wine enthusiasts visiting Madeira. The building itself dates back to the 17th century and is one of the oldest in Funchal. D’Oliveira is renowned for having one of the most substantial collections of aged Madeiran wines on the island.

Founded in 1820, Pereira D’Oliveira is still owned and operated by the founding family and has grown over the years through acquisitions. The company produces approximately 150,000 liters of wines annually, including a range of Tinta Negra wines aged for 3, 5, 10, and 15 years. Additionally, they produce Sercial Verdelho, Bual, Malmsey, and Terrantez wines, but they do not experiment much with blending grapes.

D’Oliveira uses two different processes for maturing their wines, the Estufagem process for wines marketed up to 10 years old and the Canteiro process for wines marketed as 15 years old. The company is believed to have significant stocks of older wines, totaling about 1.5 million liters, including wines from long-gone producers acquired by D’Oliveira over time.

The wines produced by D’Oliveira are widely available on the island and at the airport, often packaged in attractive wrapping, making them an excellent choice for gifts.
