Petit Point, Vienna

Petit Point, Vienna

The Petit Point stitch is a technique used in canvas embroidery and needlework, and you can find it in a quaint shop located in the city center. This shop exclusively offers top-notch Petit Point products known for their exceptional quality and value, far surpassing mere souvenirs.

Petit Point, originally from the French court, evolved over generations, with finer stitches, thinner threads, and refined colors. It later gained popularity in Austria during the Baroque era, particularly among noblewomen, flourishing in Vienna during the Rococo period with delicate work and a rich palette. Today, it draws inspiration from engravings and art of that time, influenced mainly by French and Dutch masters, continuing as a tradition.

Creating items like handbags can be a labor-intensive process, requiring 650 different shades of color and up to six months of work. Using the half cross stitch technique, artisans meticulously embroider up to 400 stitches per square centimeter, often using magnifying glasses to achieve precision. These handcrafted pieces are transformed into a range of high-quality accessories.

In 1932, Vilma Frankl-Mihalek began producing typical Viennese Petit Point hand embroidery. Today, in its fourth generation, Ing. Caroline Macholda-Zingel has been at the helm of the family-owned business since 2016, continuing the tradition of Vienna Petit Point.

The exceptional hand embroideries from Vienna Petit Point are incorporated into accessories such as handbags, compacts, purses, spectacles cases, and jewelry. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.
