Place du Chatelet (Chatelet Square), Paris

Place du Chatelet (Chatelet Square), Paris

Place du Châtelet emerges as one of Paris' most vibrant and frenzied crossroads. Yet, amidst its animated fervor, one shall encounter captivating sights such as the Fontaine aux Palmiers ("Palm Tree Fountain"), which has been commemorating Napoleon's victories since 1806. Its form boasts a palm tree trunk where atop, a figure of Victory, goddess of triumph, extends her arms skyward, each hand clasping a laurel wreath. Adorning the base, bas-relief eagles bestow their ornate grace.

Moreover, gracing this enclave are two theaters inspired by the Renaissance splendor of Italy, designed by Davioud in 1862. The Théâtre du Châtelet, with its seating capacity exceeding two thousand, serves as a sanctuary for operatic performances and resounding musical ensembles. Its celestial counterpart, the Théâtre de la Ville, its very name reverberating with history, once paid homage to Sarah Bernhardt, a luminous enchantress who who portrayed iconic characters for over twenty years. Today, the theater mainly remains devoted to contemporary dance.
