Place Vendome (Vendome Square), Paris

Place Vendome (Vendome Square), Paris

Place Vendôme, built under the orders of Louis XIV, was designed to represent absolute power in the heart of Paris. Following the classical French urban planning model, it has become one of the city's most renowned squares. Known for its luxurious ambiance, the square houses prestigious shops like Dior, Chanel, and Cartier, as well as opulent hotels such as the Ritz and Vendôme.

While the prices in the jewelry stores and boutiques may be beyond the reach of many, exploring the area is still worthwhile to appreciate its impressive architecture. In pursuit of perfection, the square's facades were meticulously constructed before the buildings themselves. At the center, an equestrian statue of Louis XIV once stood, but it was destroyed during the French Revolution, leading to the renaming of the square as Place des Piques.

The iconic Vendôme Column, originally erected by Napoleon I to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz, became a prominent feature of Place Vendôme; however, it was dismantled on May 16, 1871, by order of the Paris Commune. Eventually, it was reconstructed and still stands today, adorned with bas-reliefs inspired by Trajan's Column in Rome.
