Sacré Coeur Cathedral, Alger

Sacré Coeur Cathedral, Alger

Sacré Coeur is one of two Christian cathedrals in Alger. Built in 1956 and elevated to the cathedral rank in 1962, it became the new cathedral in Algiers after the Cathedral of St. Philip of Algiers had been reconverted into the Muslim Ketchaoua Mosque. It is the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Algiers. The concept and design of the building belong to architects Paul Herbé and Jean Le Couteur. They were inspired by the verse in the Gospel of John that reads, "God has pitched his tent among us". This tent effect is delivered by the cathedral's soaring dome, which rises 35 meters above the floor. It rests on eight piers, raised above four columns and gives the appearance of floating on air. At the entrance to the nave are the organs offered as a gift by the Boufarik parish. In this same area is a stunning mosaic dating back to 324 AD. The cathedral's altar is made of precious marble and shelters the relics of the African Saints Victor and Fulgence. The windows of Sacré Coeur are made of stained glass.
