Marienturm (St. Mary's Tower), Aachen

St. Mary's Tower or Marienturm is also known as Marienburg and is situated in the northern part of Aachen. The tower was built approximately between 1257 and 1350 as a watchtower and was adjacent in construction to the glorious city walls. It represents one of the few surviving towers of the former city walls. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 14, 1512, the day before the Assumption, hence the name of the tower. During the Second World War the tower was severely damaged and was rebuilt between 1950 and 1955. Inside you will find a memorial to the war victims of both world wars - a stone sarcophagus, created by artist Mathias C. Korr in 1933.
