Göteborgs Stadsmuseum (Museum of Gothenburg), Gothenburg

The Museum of Gothenburg, situated in the heart of Gothenburg, is a local historical institution housed within the East India House, originally constructed in 1762 as offices for the Swedish East India Company. Established in 1861, the museum primarily focuses on the cultural heritage of Gothenburg and the surrounding West Sweden region, spanning from the Viking Age to contemporary times. Notably, it features a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the Swedish East India Company.

Inspired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the museum's initial scope encompassed natural history, art, and literature, encompassing a wide range of subjects including art, science, and industry. Founded by individuals such as Sven Adolf Hedlund, AF Ericsson, August Malm, and Victor von Gegerfelt, the museum expanded with the addition of a fourth wing funded by merchant John West Wilson, which opened shortly after his passing in May 1891.

During the Gothenburg Exhibition of 1923, the city's collections were divided, with art housed in the Göteborgs konstmuseum and the remaining artifacts in the Göteborgs naturhistoriska museum. Subsequently, between 1993 and 1996, several of Gothenburg's museums specializing in archaeology, general history, and various aspects of industry, education, and theater merged to form the Göteborg City Museum.
