Statue of Anne Frank, Utrecht

Statue of Anne Frank, Utrecht

The statue of Anne Frank on the Janskerkhof in Utrecht is a statue of the German- Jewish girl Anne Frank who died at the age of fifteen during the Holocaust . Through her diary, Anne Frank has become a worldwide symbol of the victims of the Holocaust.

The bronze statue was made by the Utrecht sculptor Pieter d'Hont and was donated to the municipality by the Utrecht youth on the birthday of Queen Juliana on April 30, 1959. Among other things, the children collected old iron and paper to pay for the statue.

The statue was placed on April 12, 1960 with the help of the artist and unveiled that year. Anne Frank is depicted with two feet on the ground and with her head in the clouds. Sculptor d'Hont has depicted her with an 'absolutely positive attitude to life, with a belief in life'.

Traditionally, flowers are placed at the statue all year round. Students from the UVSV student association, among others, lay down flowers when they graduate. Since 2010, the laying of flowers has also been a practice at the Institute for Conflict Studies after a flower kiosk at the Janskerkhof that contributed to the tradition left in 2009.

Every year, during the commemoration of the dead, people observe the statue here for two minutes.

In 2021, a copy from the original molds was unveiled in Edmonton , Canada, in Light Horse Park, in honor of 75 years of liberation.
