Teatro Brancaccio (Brancaccio Theater), Rome

Teatro Brancaccio (Brancaccio Theater), Rome

Teatro Brancaccio, situated on Via Merulana in the Esquilino neighborhood of Rome, is renowned as one of Rome's most prominent and significant theaters. Nestled between the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colosseum, and the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, it occupies a prime location.

Originally opened in 1916 under the name Teatro Morgana, it was constructed adjacent to the terraced gardens of the distinguished Field-Brancaccio Palace. Over the years, the theater underwent several renovations to enhance both its exterior aesthetics and internal functionality. In 1937, it was reintroduced in its current form, featuring two foyers, a spacious auditorium, and two elevated levels—the first and second balconies—offering a seating capacity of approximately 2,000, as it is known today as Teatro Brancaccio.

Esteemed as "The Theater of Rome," Teatro Brancaccio has hosted celebrated artists throughout its illustrious history, including Totò, Anna Magnani, Aldo Fabrizi, Gigi Proietti, as well as renowned musicians such as Fabrizio De Andrè, Louis Armstrong, and Jimi Hendrix.

Today, Teatro Brancaccio is operated by CDP Viola Produzioni and is widely recognized as a prominent cultural hub. It serves as a key reference point in the national theater scene, hosting a diverse range of musicals, contemporary dance performances, music events, contemporary circus acts, stand-up comedy, drama productions, and children's theater. The programming attracts artists and companies from across Italy and abroad, solidifying the theater's position among the top-tier venues in the country. Recent renovations have transformed Teatro Brancaccio into one of the most technologically advanced theaters, focusing on environmental sustainability, audience well-being, and accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

The cultural complex of Teatro Brancaccio extends beyond the main theater space. It includes Brancaccino, a versatile venue with a telescopic seating area accommodating 104 people, as well as an expansive training area and a spacious terrace overlooking Via Merulana. In 2014, the inauguration of Spazio Impero further expanded the creative possibilities of Teatro Brancaccio, with nine rehearsal rooms synergizing with other cultural spaces within CDP, such as Sala Umberto and Spazio Diamante.
