Almaty Botanical Garden, Almaty

The Almaty Botanical Garden is the primary botanical facility managed by the Republican State Enterprise under the Institute of Botany and Phytointroduction. Established in 1932 across 108 hectares, it gained recognition as a research institution in 1967. In 2006, it earned designation as one of the "Specially Protected Natural Areas of the Republic of Kazakhstan" (SPNA), safeguarding its land from further development.

By 1982, the garden's exhibitions were organized based on botanical geography, showcasing flora from Kazakhstan, the European part of the USSR, Siberia, the Far East, Crimea, the Caucasus, North America, and East Asia. The plant arrangements followed a park-like design. Its extensive collection boasted over 7,000 plant species, including 375 from Kazakhstan, 453 from other regions of the USSR, and 872 foreign species.

The garden encompassed various plant departments focusing on flora and ecology, woody plants, decorative and ornamental species, tropical plants, as well as food and medicinal species, along with technical aspects of plant reproduction and protection. Additionally, there was a laboratory dedicated to plant physiology and biology. Scientists engaged in research related to plant introduction, acclimatization, and the exploration of the Republic's plant resources. Over 100 species, 46 forms, and 15 varieties of plants from diverse geographical origins were provided for urban landscaping.

Moreover, the Research Institute Main Botanical Garden coordinated activities with five other botanical gardens in Kazakhstan—Karaganda, Zhezkazgan, Altai, Iliysk, and Mangyshlak—facilitating the exchange of scientific literature, planting material, and seeds with 108 botanical gardens across 48 countries.

Within the Almaty Botanical Garden lies the Sak Mound, positioned 600 meters south of the garden's management office, 200 meters southwest of the greenhouse, to the right of the central alley, and 800 meters above Timiryazev Street.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, the former (and the first) President of Kazakhstan, once remarked: "Almaty is the pearl of Kazakhstan, the most beautiful city in Central Asia." Indeed, the country's largest metropolis, Almaty is like a butterfly that has emerged from its cocoon, spreading its wings and soaring towards the sky at the foothills of the Tien Shan Mountains.
