Horta-Lambeaux Pavilion (Temple of Human Passions), Brussels

Within Jubilee Park, a distinctive attraction is the Horta-Lambeaux Pavilion, nestled in the park's northwest corner. Though it may appear unassuming from the outside, the Neoclassical structure holds the subtitle "Pavilion of Human Passions" due to its sculpture, created by Jef Lambeaux in 1886, which depicts intertwined and unclothed figures under the watchful gaze of a shrouded Death. Purpose-built to house this sculpture, the pavilion represented Victor Horta's first public commission; surprisingly, it offers no glimpse of Horta's later organic and decorative architectural style for which he gained renown. Interestingly, just three days after its opening, the pavilion was closed due to the controversy stirred by Lambeaux's provocative sculpture, particularly its depiction of a crucified Christ, which deeply offended religious conservatives of the era.

Adjacent to the pavilion stands a sizable cream-colored building that serves as Brussels' primary mosque. Built in 1978, it follows a modern Arabic architectural style, courtesy of a Tunisian architect. While an important religious center, this mosque is not emblematic of the city's contemporary multiculturalism but rather serves as a replacement for an earlier mosque dating back to 1897.
