The Deichtorhallen, Hamburg

The Deichtorhallen, Hamburg

The Deichtorhallen is an internationally recognised modern art and photography museum, located between the Kunstmeile and HafenCity in central Hamburg. The gallery is housed within two glass and steel buildings, constructed in 1913 in the short lived industrial style. They are built on the site of the former Berliner Banhof, a train station with services to the German capital. Coincidentally, the terminus for these services, Berlin’s Hamburger Banhof, is also now a modern art museum.

The two buildings are accessed through a walk through instillation by Matthies, and a Richard Serra sculpture can be found at the front of the museum complex. Several other esteemed contemporary artists are featured inside the gallery, both from Germany and abroad. They include Gilbert & George, Mario Merz, Lillian Bassman and Martin Parr. The museum has grown in popularity since 1989, when it became council owned. Since then it has put on a range of internationally successful art and photography exhibitions. Admission is 9 Euros for adults, 6 Euros for children, students and senior citizens.
