Yagan Square, Perth

Yagan Square, Perth

Yagan Square, located in Perth, is a lively public area that plays a key role in the Perth City Link project, connecting the Horseshoe Bridge and the Perth Busport in the Perth City Link's eastern part. Covering an area of 1.1 hectares (2.7 acres), the square's development started in February 2016 and it officially opened on March 3, 2018. It's named after Yagan, a respected Aboriginal warrior, to honor the cultural and historic importance of the site.

The design of the square intentionally honors the local Noongar people, recognizing the indigenous heritage and the area's natural history, especially the lakes that used to be under the current Perth railway station and Wellington Street. It offers walkways from various directions, like Roe Street, Karak Walk, the Busport, Wellington Street, and the Horseshoe Bridge, making it easy to get to and from the square while blending well with the nearby city areas.

A key attraction in Yagan Square is the 45-meter-tall "digital tower" in the southwest corner. This tower, with its 30-meter-wide screen, is not just a modern symbol but also a platform for digital art, movies, and live shows, including sports and special events like satellite launches and solar eclipses. In 2021, it was used to show pictures of missing child Cleo Smith, highlighting its role in community initiatives.

The square also features art and nature with important works like "Wirin," a 9-meter statue by Noongar artist Tjyllyungoo that captures the spiritual power and earth connection. The "Waterline," a 190-meter-long water feature by Jon Tarry, along with a grassy area and wildflower garden, adds a peaceful touch to the urban setting.

The eastern side of Yagan Square has a 500-person outdoor amphitheater, covered by a digital canopy that draws inspiration from historical Lakes Kingsford and Irwin. This space hosts a variety of events, from music and performances to fitness classes, making it a cultural spot in Perth.
