Volksbuhne (People's Theatre), Berlin

Volksbuhne (People's Theatre), Berlin

The People's Theatre, founded in the early 20th century, owes its origins to the dedicated efforts of the 100,000 members of the Freie Volksbühne (Free People's Theatre Society). In 1913, the original theatre was constructed during a period of rapid redevelopment in the Scheunenviertel district. It gained fame in the 1920s, particularly under the direction of Erwin Piscator (1893–1966), who later achieved significant recognition at the Metropol-Theater on Nollendorfplatz.

Unfortunately, the theatre was destroyed during World War II, but saw a revival in the early 1950s when it was rebuilt according to the designs of Hans Richter. Today, it stands as one of the city's most prominent cultural venues, known for its penchant for staging controversial performances. Even if you don't attend a show, the stunning entrance and foyers alone make it a worthwhile destination.

Tip:
For those who do not speak German, consider getting tickets for "Murmel Murmel," as it's the only word used during the 80-minute performance.
