Guide to Gamla Stan: Explore Stockholm's Old Town

Sweden, Stockholm Guide (B): Guide to Gamla Stan: Explore Stockholm's Old Town

Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s old town. It is one of the largest and best preserved medieval city centres in Europe and is where you’l find the vast array of Stockholm’s most famous attractions.

Home to world-class museums, iconic sights and royal attractions, as well as restaurants, cafes and bars, Gamla Stan is a must for anyone visiting Stockholm.

The Royal Palace is a massive building that dominates the northern-eastern part of Gamla Stan. Built between 1697 and 1754, the Royal Palace boasts 600 rooms each brimming with history and legends.

Although it’s no longer the official residence of the Swedish King and Queen (they live out in Bromma at Drottningholm and use this palace for royal ceremonies), it’s well worth your time to explore the Royal Palace as it’s home to five great museums, including the Royal Apartments, the Tre Kronor Museum and The Treasury. Here you can see incredible artefacts like the throne of Queen Kristina and the hall of the State. ...... (follow the instructions below for accessing the rest of this article).
