Sure, Ibarra can have a workaday feel. Also, although it may be blighted by unsightly electrical wires at times, it has two unforgettable plazas, one of which is just outstanding. Add in some good coffee, and an excellent ice cream parlour and the city becomes more than a quick stopping off point in northern Ecuador. Whether you want to take a break on the way to or coming from Colombia, or you want to get a real taste of life in the country, the city will reward your efforts.

Plaza de la Merced, despite its intricate landscaping, is the more commercial of the two plazas in the city centre. Meanwhile, Moncayo would probably approve of the wide-open plaza that bears his name even if the local pigeons show disrespect for his statue. Palm trees and colourful flowers help to give the square its character- tropical but austere.

Don’t miss the cathedral. Only a few short steps away from the brightly coloured flowers, its dark and cavernous interior feels like a world apart.

All in all, with the addition of an eclectic cafe, Plaza Moncayo isn’t a bad place to spend a relaxing day.
