My friend Demir was right. He said "When you get to Istanbul you are going to say Damn! Why didn't I come here before? This place is great!" Maybe he planted the seed in my mind but that is exactly what I thought when I got to Istanbul and after a couple days I knew this was a city I would come back to again and again if I did not end up living here. What is it like? Well it feels Greek since after all it began as a Greek city, Constantinople. In fact the name Istanbul comes from the Greek Stin Poli (The City). And make no mistake that to Greeks, Constantinople, not Athens or Thessaloniki is THE CITY.

It feels like home to us. And if there is anywhere in the world where Greeks and Turks should be able to live together it is in Istanbul. But even my non-Greek side was impressed with Istanbul. Imagine a San Francisco straddling the straits between the Aegean and the Black Sea, where there is water everywhere and a larger population than New York or London. In fact there are more people in Istanbul than there are in all of Greece. It is a big cosmopolitan city with a young, hip population, great food (similar to Greek), lots of antiquities, archaeological sites, churches, mosques, and a million places to walk, ride or sail to.
