New York City Pizza Love, New York, New York (B)

If you are a younger boomer, a GenXer or an older Millennial, you may remember a pizza kit from Chef Boyardee. It was generic and appealed to everyone, certainly not identified with a place like New York or Chicago.

Growing up, I loved that stuff. Hey, don’t judge me…I was probably only four or five when I made that determination, and this was before I discovered the pies that came from actual pizzerias. I wouldn’t touch that now, even if it was the last food source in nuclear holocaust.

For those of you who don’t know this wonder of 1970s food technology, it came with the three essential ingredients to make a “complete” pizza: a bag of flour, leavening agent and hypertension-producing amount of salt; overly sweet tomato sauce in a weirdly skinny can; and a packet of gummy Parmesan cheese that was probably more preservative than dairy. Some varieties even featured sausage or pepperoni.
