From across the sea, the enchanting island of Zanzibar beckoned to us. The stunning view of endless palm-fringed beaches was the perfect appetiser for our two-day visit and the shrubbery at the airport welcomed us warmly with the words “SMILE U R IN ZANZIBAR”. Zanzibar is an archipelago located in Tanzania, East Africa. An island steeped in history and culture, it is famous for its historic heart, Stone Town, it's stunning beaches, spice plantations and water sports like snorkeling and kiteboarding.

A walking tour of the markets of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, began our exploration. The fruit stalls were interspersed with the spice stalls and the colours and scents mingled to produce a heady combination. The stench of the fish market was a far cry from the scent of the fruit and spice markets and was surpassed by the foul smell of the chicken market. We walked through the market as quickly as possible in a bid to escape and found ourselves in another century. The winding cobblestone alleys of Stonetown were lined with antique nineteenth-century residences and mosques, denoted by intricately carved doors and balconies. ......
