Vienna Day 2, Vienna, Austria (B)
Much later than 8am: We get up, get ready and head out onto the mean city streets, or as we’re in Vienna, the immaculately clean pavements.
We head into the city centre (Innere Stadt) past so many beautiful buildings, most notable of which being the Church of Mariahilf; a compact, tardis-like church tucked in a tiny square on the Mariahilfer Straße, which blossoms inside into a gloriously over-the-top frescoed baroque interior with one of the most outrageously decorated organs I have ever seen. Vienna seems a far cry from student living.
After wandering off through the museums quarter we find the Natural History Museum (http://www.nhm-wien.ac.at/en, €5/£4/$5.50 entry for students), which is spectacular, both as a museum and as a building.
With everything from actual dinosaur bones (yes you can touch them, no they’re not casts) to hilarious taxidermy and convenient signs in English this museum is a must for anybody with a vague interest in the world around them, if for no other reason than the restaurant is really good and for Vienna, fairly cheap. One thing I’ve learned so far here is to always look up when you get the chance, especially indoors, because the decorations extend all the way up. ......
