Chinatown Shopping (Self Guided), San Francisco

Experience the rich cultural attractions and exciting shopping and dining opportunities of the largest Chinese community outside Asia, the Chinatown centered on Grant Avenue and Stockton Street. This is one of San Francisco's four Chinatowns, and it is the oldest in North America. Revel in the always bustling activity, the distinctive signage, temples, pagoda roofs, dragon parades and the bright colors.

There are really two Chinatowns here, which together attract more visitors annually than the Golden Gate Bridge. One is for the tourists and one for the locals, though you can freely wander between the two. Don't just stick to the obvious tourist locales, venture down side streets and back alleys for an authentic slice of this distinctive locale.

There are hundreds of shops to explore with many along Grant Avenue, the main artery through the neighborhood. This is the most tourist part of the Chinatown and is also where you can pick up lots of bargains. Stockton Street is where many of the locals shop, and it encompasses fresh fish markets.

If you want to keep the crowds at arm’s length, go over to Waverly Place. This is a more relaxed and relatively tranquil place to shop. The two-block long street is home to a small number of stores, including clothing shops and a few jewelry stores. There are also numerous temples.
