City Centre - Gardens Shopping Walk (Self Guided), Cape Town

Shopping in Cape Town is great fun, not only because most of the main shopping area is only for pedestrians, but also because you will find a great variety of goods ranging from top-of-the-market to strange quirky items whose use is a mystery.

On Long Street a lot of the buildings date back to the Victorian era and have beautiful wrought iron balconies. Visit the Long Street Arcade which houses a dozen very good antique stores that sell African art, small collectible items and vintage clothes. You will find more up-market antique shops on Church Street. Along Kloof Street you will find excellent galleries and small arts and crafts shops – perfect for gifts and souvenirs.

St George’s Mall is a bustling pedestrian street with tree-lined sidewalks. It is famous for its street dancers, musicians and artists, its sidewalk cafes and its good restaurants. On this street you will find informal stalls and curio shops selling traditional African items. This is also the street to head for if you want to visit excellent jewelry stores, where you will be sure to find that perfect item at an affordable price. There are also several department stores to explore and several very good clothing shops. The area also boats a lively nightlife, so if you stay on for the evening you won’t find a shortage of bars and clubs.
