Dorsoduro Walk (Self Guided), Venice

Dorsoduro is one of Venice's six sestiere, a beautiful district full of galleries, churches and great museums. It has all the art, architecture and splendor of other parts of the city, but without the crowds. Here you will find some of Venice's most picturesque canals, old palaces with stunning marble façades, narrow alleyways, walled gardens, magnificent Baroque edifices and delightful squares. Such is its charm and beauty that many artists and designers have moved into the district. Art lovers are in for a real treat at Dorsoduro.

See the work of such Venetian greats as Titian and Tiepolo at the Gallerie dell’Accademia. Over at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, find pieces by 20th-century masters, including Dali, Picasso and Jackson Pollock. Take the time to study the museum building, which is an unfinished palace dating back to the middle of the 18th century. One of its highlights is a terrace that backs on to the scenic Grand Canal. The focal point of the district is Campo Santa Margherita. By day, browse its market stalls and shops, and at night, dine on delicious Venetian cuisine in the restaurants and stay late in a cozy bar. Many places in this vibrant area are open until the small hours.
