Lisbon has plenty of antique shops and the best ones are to be found along and around Escola Politécnica and São Bento. If you want up-market antiques, you’ll find them on Escola Politécnica. Here you will find azulejos dating back to the 16th century, English tea-chests, carved Indian wall panels, antique toys, superb furniture and traditional hand-stitched Portuguese rugs. This is rather a steep street, so it’s best to start at the top and work your way down. São Bento is somewhat less venerable than its up-market neighbor; along this street you’ll find some really great junk shops where you might unearth a real bargain. Other stores specialize in rare ceramics and porcelain, pedestals and mirrors, Spanish and Portuguese mahogany furniture, beautiful model ships, carved wooden alter pieces and even huge columns from stately mansions. Military buffs will find an impressive collection of swords, guns and medals awarded in long-forgotten wars. All the stores accept a little polite haggling over their prices. They close for a two hour lunch break, which will give you plenty of time to enjoy a good meal in one of the many restaurants along both streets, which run more or less parallel to each other.
