Embark on an exciting treasure hunt through the streets of Gion district to find antique pieces and curios. The neighborhood is well known for its many antique stores, some of which have been here for generations. Browse for such antique items as woodblock prints, old maps, Kutani ware, porcelains, wood carvings and other sculptures. Talk to knowledgeable dealers about their unique merchandise. At Shinmonzen Street, you will come across antique shops and fine art dealers that have been in business since the late 19th century. The other principle destinations for antique finds are Shinmonzen Dori and Furumonzen Dori, two streets that run parallel to each other. Specifically, they are known for their Buddhist artwork, antiquated everyday items and tea ceremony utensils. In Shimonzen Dori, where there are many two story wooden building, shops specialize in paintings, scrolls and netsuke, which are small carved figures that are attached to clothing. Even if you have no intention of buying a thing, a tour of Gion district is a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours, looking at the beauty and craftsmanship of old collectables. Some of the items also provide a glimpse of how people used to live.
