Hayes Valley Shopping, San Francisco

Hayes Valley is a top retail destination and surely one of San Francisco's best kept secrets. Many visitors have never heard of the place, yet it has a rich variety of clothing boutiques, stores and vintage shops that can rival any shopping district in the city. If it is fashion you are looking for, spend some time around Octavia Boulevard and Hayes Street. The shelves and the racks of the boutiques and stores here are filled with exciting creations and wonderful new looks. Perhaps one of the reasons why Hayes Valley is not such a familiar name is because it has only recently emerged in its current form following the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989. The natural disaster stoked fears of the collapse of the double decker freeway that used to run through the area, so city officials ordered it to be torn down. Not only does this enclave of great shopping have a lot to offer, but it's also well connected to the rest of the city and is very close to some famous tourist attractions. The Civic Center area is only a few minutes’ walk away as are the Painted Ladies, the colorful Victorian and Edwardian townhouses. Among all the stores, you will find a generous smattering of excellent restaurants catering for a variety of palates.
