Noordereiland Walk (Self Guided), Rotterdam

Noordereiland is a beautiful little island in the Nieuwe Maas River, full of character and charm. It is a tranquil place to escape to if you want a little respite from the busy city, and has been a protected cityscape since 2005. The neighborhood is known for many things, including its old, elegant buildings with inner courtyards and its lovely views of the city.

Before your visit, meander along the Boompjeskade, a waterfront boulevard that has followed the course of the river since the early 17th century. From here, you can enjoy superb views of the island. There is lots of greenery along the route, including rows of linden trees. To get across to the island, take a bus or water taxi or simply walk.

One of the incredible features of this part of the city is De Hef, an out of service train bridge that was designed in 1927. This is the largest and most famous lift bridge in Rotterdam and has a height of 197 feet (60 meters). It is the only surviving remnant of where trains used to leave the center of the city. Not only is the grand old structure admired by members of the general public, but this wonderful example of engineering is a continual source of inspiration for architects, filmmakers and poets.
