After not completely loving northern Vietnam, I found it difficult –well, impossible really – to resist the charm of the little town of Hoi An. Previously a trading port from the 15th to 19th century, Hoi An’s ancient town is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the region is growing more and more famous among tourists. If you happen to be traveling through Vietnam, here are five great reasons to give Hoi An a spot on your itinerary:

Ancient Town – With no motorized vehicles allowed, Hoi An’s ancient town is a serene place to stroll or bike along for a self-guided tour. Because Hoi An is one of the places untouched by war, the old colonial architecture remains well preserved and adds a certain charm to the town. The quaint buildings alongside peaceful canals and the many little shops full of cheap items make it easy to get carried away and casually browse for hours.
