University of Bern

1) University of Bern

The University of Bern was founded in 1834. The university is regulated and financed by the Canton of Bern. The university buildings are located throughout the city, although most are centered around Länggass Street, an area immediately northwest of the city center. An elevator from the city's main train station provides access to the terrace directly in front of the main administration building. The University of Bern, as well as the City and the Canton of Bern, have won many prizes for their ecological and sustainable retrofitting of old buildings.

Baldachin Station is a state-of-the-art station built in 2008. The most amazing feature of this construction is the “Baldachin” – an expensive roof made of glass that is held together by impressive metal arches. The station was awarded Bern's 2008 Best Architectural Spot.

Bern Theater, or Stadttheater Bern, is a notable opera house and theater in Bern. Many famous singers have performed at this venue. The building dates back to the 18th century, and its architectural design is quite impressive. Some of the performances and plays here are dubbed in English. Kornhausbrücke

5) Kornhausbrücke

Kornhausbrücke Bridge crosses the Aare River and connects the historical center with the more modern section of the city. It was built from 1895 - 1898, and the engineers were Paul Simon and Theodore Bell. This bridge was named in honor of Kornhaus Bernese, the Duke of Kornhausplatz.

Rathaus is a political center located in Bern's historic district. It was built from 1406-1415. The building has many Gothic influences. Since its founding, it has served as Bern’s Town Hall.

Nydeggbrücke Bridge connects the new and the old part of eastern Bern. Construction on the bridge began in 1840 and continued for three years. It was built simultaneously with another bridge – Untertorbrücke. The bridge spans 190 meters and has vertical columns supported at each end by piers.
